Chapter 20

Chris

The crowd is insane tonight, and I should have expected nothing less. Excitement buzzes off the walls around us, filling the stadium with a stifling heat that warms my core and makes my heart pound. Faces look up at us from the crowd...faces of every age. Teenagers, women, men, even children. They’re screaming, screaming so loud I can barely hear myself think, but I don’t care. This is perfection. This is bliss.

“Las Vegas!” I shout, and the fans roar. A bead of sweat slides down from my temple. I barely notice. Behind me on the stage, Mike begins to strum a tune on his guitar. The fans yell louder, a deafening vibration that shakes the stage beneath our feet. Next to Mike, Jake taps the drum, and the excitement only grows.

“Thank you for having us, Vegas,” I say into the microphone. More cheers. Applause. In the VIP standing section, I see the girls. Grace is snapping photos, barely looking away from the lens. Quinn, however, is watching me. There’s a small smile on her face, a smile I’ve grown to adore. I want to step off the stage and pull her into my arms. I want to kiss her. I want to love her. I want to hold her in front of all of these people and proclaim my love for her. Instead, I face back to the crowd and raise my arms in the air. “We love you, Vegas, and we hope you enjoy the show.”

Lights dim around us, and the flashing strobe lights engulf us all in a stunning array of pastel colors. The guys have their instruments playing, teasing the crowd with the opening of one of our favorite songs. I catch another glimpse at Quinn. She’s grinning, and it’s impossible not to smile back. I put my lips to the mic, close my eyes, and begin to sing.

The entire show lasts longer than usual, but none of us mind because the fans are so great. We end up playing more songs, ones we normally wouldn’t play at any show, but they all love it. It’s almost eleven by the time things wind up, and I’m both exhausted and exhilarated at the same time.

Backstage, Gina hands us all towels and cold-water bottles, slapping each of us on the back with a job well done. I keep my eyes peeled for Quinn, hoping she hasn’t left the venue and gone back to her room already. I dash into my dressing room to clean up only to find Quinn already there, sitting cross-legged on a suede couch, her red hair pulled back into a sweet, scarlet braid down her back. She smiles when I come in, and my heart skips a beat.

“Great show,” she says. “I couldn’t tear my attention away.”

“I agree. It was a great one.” I plop down on the couch next to her, careful not to make the first move in case my sweat grosses her out. It doesn’t seem to, because a second later she’s facing me, leaning in to touch my face, then my hair.
